Sunday Alcohol Sales and Expanded Cold Beer Sales: Why Indiana Can't Afford This "Convenience"
More information...
Read the Letter to the Editor by Charlotte Pontius, Board President, regarding attempts to authorize retail sales of alcohol on Sundays (published 7-17-09 in the Indianapolis Star)
Dear Editor,
In reference to the July 4th article on “Sunday liquor sales advocates regrouping for 2010”: with nearly 18 million Americans who have alcoholism or related problems one would hardly equate greater availability of alcohol as a movement for independence. Matt Norris of Hoosiers for Beverage Choice identifies increased tax revenue as a benefit. He fails to account for the added cost to communities caused by increases in car crashes and violent crimes. Additional incidents would surely occur due to the addition of another day of alcohol sales and the provision of ready to use alcohol at gas station mini marts, grocery, drug and convenience stores. A ten year study in New Mexico showed a 29% increase in Sunday alcohol related crashes.
Drug Free Marion County, tired of witnessing the tragedies caused by excessive drinking, now advocate for sensible public policies which properly limit the availability of alcohol. Policy experts such as Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America recommend implementing policies that prevent the sale of alcohol to minors, reduce availability and increase accountability for all retailers.
Efforts to increase alcohol availability are a marketing tactic to increase profits for certain types of retailers and alcohol manufacturers. The unknown truth is that the majority of American adults drink infrequently or not at all. So who benefits from alcohol being sold on Sundays? It is the 23 percent of the population who binge drink. This minority of adults manage to consume 76 percent of the nation’s alcohol supply . The other segment of society who takes advantage of increased access is underage drinkers. Nationally underage drinkers consume 11% of all alcohol purchased in the United States . Not only do binge drinkers consume the vast majority of alcohol but they are consuming it in quantities that not only put their own health and safety at risk, but put the public at risk for the crime, violence, and accidents that result from being impaired.
Is the convenience to buy alcohol on Sundays or cold beer worth more than our health, safety and quality of life? Contact your state legislature to voice your opinion.
